The Bureau of National Affairs, Inc. has recently published an analysis of collective bargaining data compiled from September 19, 2010 through September 19, 2011. The data shows that the average first-year wage increase was 1.3 percent, compared with 1.7 percent in the comparable period of 2010. The median first-year wage increase reported in 2011 was 1 percent, compared with 1.6 percent in 2010.

Of note, the average increase for construction agreements was 1.9 percent, compared with 0.1 percent in 2010. The median first-year wage increase for construction agreements increased to 1.6 percent from zero percent in 2010. Moreover, the average increase for manufacturing agreements was 1.8 percent, compared with 1.3 percent in 2010. The median first-year wage increase for manufacturing agreements remained the same at 2 percent as reported a year ago.

The following table provides a comprehensive breakdown of the collective bargaining data reported by the Bureau of National Affairs, Inc., but does not include automatic increases effective after 12 months (designated as deferred increases) or cost-of-living adjustments. Portions of the construction industry wage increase may be diverted to pay for the increasing cost of benefits.
